Quoting FDM jobs is relatively straightforward: material weight, machine time, and a little labor for support removal. Resin printing — SLA, DLP, and MSLA — adds layers of complexity that catch many shops off guard. If you treat resin jobs like filament jobs, you will underprice them and erode margin on every order.
Why Resin Quoting Is Different
Resin processes share a common physics: a vat of photopolymer cured by light. But the cost structure diverges from FDM in three ways. First, material waste is higher — uncured resin stays in the vat, supports consume resin that never ships, and failed prints waste the entire build volume. Second, post-processing is mandatory and labor-intensive: washing, secondary curing, support removal, and often sanding or coating. Third, machine time does not scale linearly with part count; a full build plate of small parts takes the same layer exposure time as one tall part.
Most shops capture machine time and raw resin cost. Few capture the downstream labor and consumables that can double the true cost of a job.
Build the Quote From the Bottom Up
1. Resin Consumption — Not Just Part Volume
Start with the slicer’s reported resin volume for the part plus supports. Add a waste factor: 5-10% for vat residue, spillage, and expired resin disposal. For dental or jewelry resins that cost $200-500 per liter, that waste factor matters. Multiply by your landed cost per liter including shipping and hazardous-material surcharges.
2. Support Structure Strategy
Support volume can equal or exceed part volume on lattice-heavy or overhang-rich geometries. Quote supports as a separate line item so customers see the cost of geometry choices. If your slicer reports support volume, apply the same resin cost plus a small handling markup. If it doesn’t, estimate 15-30% of part volume for typical organic shapes and 40-60% for complex overhangs.
3. Machine Time by Layer, Not by Hour
Resin printers cure layer by layer. Exposure time per layer is fixed for a given resin and layer height. Total machine time = layer count × exposure time + peel/retract moves + wipe cycles. A 100 mm tall part at 50 µm layers = 2,000 layers. At 2.5 seconds per layer that’s 83 minutes of pure exposure — before wipe delays. Quote the machine hour rate your shop uses, but calculate hours from the slice file, not a guess.
4. Wash Cycles — Consumables and Labor
Two-stage IPA washing is standard: a dirty wash and a clean wash. Track IPA consumption per liter of parts processed. Most shops replace IPA when contamination hits 5-10% resin saturation. Add labor for loading/unloading the wash station, typically 5-10 minutes per build plate. If you use an automated wash/cure unit, include its depreciation and cycle time.
5. UV Post-Cure
Final properties require a validated UV cure cycle. Cycle time varies by resin: 5 minutes for standard engineering resins, 30+ minutes for high-temp or biocompatible grades. Include the cure unit’s power draw, bulb/degradation schedule, and the operator time to load and unload. If you outsource curing, pass that cost through with markup.
6. Support Removal and Finishing
This is where quotes go wrong. Hand removal with flush cutters takes 2-10 minutes per part depending on support density and access. Automated support removal (ultrasonic, media tumbling) has capital cost and cycle time. Sanding, bead blasting, or coating adds more labor. Quote finishing as a separate tier: “as-printed,” “supports removed,” “cosmetic finish.” Let the customer choose — and pay for — the level they need.
Account for Build Failures and Yield
Resin prints fail — adhesion loss, delamination, resin contamination. A 5% failure rate on a 20-part build means one reprint. Build that risk into the quote: either a per-part yield surcharge (2-5%) or a build-level contingency. If you reprint at your cost, you need margin to absorb it. If the customer owns the risk, state that clearly in your terms.
Nesting and Build Plate Utilization
Unlike FDM, resin build time is driven by Z-height, not XY area. Nesting many short parts on one plate is nearly free in machine time. Nesting tall parts with short ones wastes Z-height. Your quoting logic should evaluate plate utilization: if a customer’s parts leave 60% of the build volume empty, offer a discount for adding more parts or charge a “minimum build” fee that covers the fixed costs of a plate run.
Present the Quote in Tiers
Don’t dump a single number. Show the breakdown:
- Material (resin + waste factor)
- Supports (volume × resin cost)
- Machine time (calculated from slice)
- Wash consumables + labor
- Cure cycle time + consumables
- Support removal + finishing tier
- Yield contingency
