You receive an RFQ for a complex CNC part with thin walls, deep pockets, and tight tolerances that will require multiple setups. The customer wants a price by end of day. Why DFM Feedback Stalls in the Quote Phase

When a customer submits a file, they are asking: “Can you make this? How much? How fast?” A silent quote answers only price. A quote paired with specific DFM observations answers all three and signals competence.
Instead of a generic “design requires review” note, try responses like:
- “We can hit your tolerance on the bore if we add a secondary finishing operation — adds $X and 1 day.”
- “The 0.5 mm wall on this feature will deflect during machining. Increasing to 0.8 mm lets us run it in one setup and saves $Y.”
- “This internal corner radius requires a custom tool. Standard 3 mm radius drops cycle time by 20%.”
Each statement shows you have looked at the geometry, understand the process, and are already solving their problem.
Standardize the Feedback Loop
Ad-hoc DFM notes are hard to scale. Create a lightweight checklist tied to your most common processes — CNC, sheet metal, additive — so estimators can flag issues consistently without waiting for engineering review on every quote.
Example checklist items for a CNC quote:
- Minimum wall thickness vs. tool deflection risk
- Internal corner radii vs. standard tool library
- Deep pocket depth-to-diameter ratio
- Tolerance stack-up on multi-setup features
- Material availability and lead time

Quantify the Trade-Offs
Vague advice (“consider thicker walls”) gets ignored. Quantified trade-offs get decisions. Whenever possible, attach a cost or time delta to each DFM suggestion.

Now the conversation shifts from “your price is high” to “which option fits my budget and timeline?” You have given them a menu instead of a take-it-or-leave-it number.
Capture DFM Knowledge for Next Time
Every DFM interaction teaches you something about your process limits and your customers’ design patterns. Feed that back into your quoting engine.
If you repeatedly see the same wall-thickness issue on a certain material, bake a rule into your quote template that auto-flags it and suggests the fix. If a customer consistently designs features that require 5-axis when 3-axis would work, build a macro that proposes the redesign at quote time.
Over time, your quotes become faster and your DFM feedback becomes proactive instead of reactive.
Close the Loop With the Customer
After the order ships, follow up on the DFM changes you recommended. “The radius adjustment on the bracket saved two setups and we hit the tolerance first article.” This reinforces the value of listening to your feedback and makes the next RFQ easier to convert.
It also creates a record you can reference in future conversations: “Last time we moved the radius and cut lead time by 30%. Happy to do the same here.”
