Nobody reads a 20-question form. The goal is a lightweight checklist that covers the variables that actually move cost and lead time. Tailor it to your processes. A 3D printing service bureau needs different scope items than a 5-axis CNC shop.
Effective checklists share three traits:
- Process-specific. Group items by manufacturing step: raw material, machining, post-processing, inspection, shipping.
- Binary where possible. “Heat treat required? Y/N” beats “Describe heat treatment requirements.” Force a decision.
- Linked to pricing rules. Every checklist item should map to a line item or multiplier in your quote engine. If it doesn’t affect price or schedule, it doesn’t belong on the pre-quote checklist.
