Most shops have a solid handle on quoting the primary manufacturing step — whether that’s CNC machining time, 3D printing build hours, or laser cutting nest yield. But the quote often falls apart once the part leaves the machine.

Heat treatment, surface finishing, inspection, assembly, and packaging are real costs with real lead times. If they’re buried in a catch-all line item or left out entirely, you either lose margin or lose the job because your price looks inflated without explanation.

Why Post-Processing Gets Missed

Estimators focus on what the shop does directly. Subcontracted heat treating? That’s the vendor’s problem. Anodizing? The finisher handles it. First-article inspection? Quality deals with that. The result: quotes that only cover internal machine time.

Customers, however, expect a complete price and a realistic delivery date. When post-processing isn’t scoped, two things happen: the shop eats the cost, or the customer gets a surprise change order — and trust erodes.

Map the Full Sequence First

Before building a quote, list every step from raw material to shipped part. A typical sequence might look like:

  • Primary manufacturing (CNC, print, cut, form)

Showing these as separate line items — not a lump sum — lets the customer see where the money goes and lets you adjust individual steps without rewriting the whole quote.

Quote Lead Time, Not Just Price

A three-day anodize queue plus two days shipping each way adds a week to delivery. If your quote says “5 days” because that’s your print time, you’ve set a false expectation.

Build the timeline the same way you build the price: sum the critical path. Flag steps with variable vendor lead times so sales can communicate ranges (“10–12 business days”) instead of a single date that becomes a missed commitment.

Handle Revision and Rework Risk

Post-processing is where good parts go bad. A warped heat treat, a missed mask, a coating thickness out of spec — these trigger rework or scrap.

Include a rework allowance for high-risk steps (typically 2–5% of the step cost) and note it in the quote. If the customer asks why, explain: “Anodize rework rate is ~3%; we include a buffer so neither of us gets surprised.” That transparency builds confidence.

Standardize With Templates

You shouldn’t rebuild this logic for every RFQ. Create quote templates for common part families — “CNC + Heat Treat + Anodize,” “Print + Support Removal + Dye + FAI,” “Laser + Bend + Powder Coat.” Each template pre-loads the steps, rates, and typical vendor lead times.

When a new RFQ arrives, the estimator selects the closest template, verifies the specifics, and adjusts. Quoting time drops from 30 minutes to 5, and nothing gets forgotten.
