A fabricated assembly isn’t just the sum of its parts. The welding process itself introduces labor, consumables, inspection, and risk that don’t appear on a cut list. Shops that treat weldments like a pile of parts with a “welding adder” leave money on the table — or lose jobs to competitors who quote tighter.
The variables that matter most:
- Fit-up and tacking time — often 20–40% of total weld labor
- Distortion management — fixturing, sequencing, pre-heat, or post-weld straightening
- Weld process selection — MIG, TIG, flux-core, laser — each with different speed, skill, and cost profiles
- Inspection requirements — visual, dye penetrant, ultrasonic, or radiographic
- Post-weld operations — grinding, machining critical surfaces, heat treatment, coating
Build a Weldment Quote From the Ground Up
Start with the BOM, but don’t stop there. A repeatable weldment quote follows this sequence:
- Nest and quote the raw parts — laser, waterjet, plasma, or saw-cut. Include drop and remnant logic.
- Define the weld map — joint type, length, weld size, process, and position (flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead).
- Apply labor standards — use your historical data or published rates (AWS D1.1, ISO 3834) for deposit rate, travel speed, and operator factor.
- Add fixturing and setup — dedicated fixture amortization or one-off build time.
- Layer in distortion control — pre-bend, clamp, sequence, or straightening time.
- Include consumables and gas — wire, shielding gas, tips, nozzles, backing gas for stainless.
- Quote finishing separately — grind flush, machine datums, passivate, powder coat, anodize.
Each step should be a line item in your quote engine so you can adjust assumptions without rebuilding the whole estimate.
Use Geometry to Drive the Numbers
Modern quoting software can extract weld length, joint type, and accessibility from a 3D model or STEP file. If you’re still measuring welds by hand on a PDF drawing, you’re adding hours per quote and introducing error.
Key geometric inputs:
- Total weld length per joint type (fillet, groove, plug, slot)
- Weld position distribution — flat is 1×, overhead can be 2–3× slower
- Accessibility — can the gun reach? Does the part need reorientation?
- Thickness transitions — dissimilar thicknesses demand different parameters
When your quote engine reads the model, you get consistent numbers whether a senior estimator or a new hire runs the RFQ.
Account for Risk Without Padding
Padding a weldment quote “just in case” makes you uncompetitive. Instead, make risk visible:
- Flag critical dimensions that require post-weld machining — quote the machining op explicitly.
- Call out inspection levels — if the RFQ doesn’t specify, quote to your standard and note the delta for higher levels.
- Identify single-point failures — a weld that, if rejected, scraps the whole assembly. Price the rework risk or qualify the process upfront.
- Track material certs and traceability — coded welds, heat numbers, welder qualifications add admin time.
Present these as optional line items. The customer sees transparency; you protect margin.
Standardize the Hand-Off to Production
A confident quote becomes a confident work order when the data flows downstream. The same weld map that drove the estimate should generate:
- Weld procedure specification (WPS) selection or creation
- Traveler with step-by-step sequence, fixturing, and hold points
- Inspector checklist matched to the quoted inspection level
- Material and consumable kits staged for the cell
