SLS powder cleanup is the unglamorous part of running powder-bed machines. In a September 2025 r/SLSprinting thread titled “Dust everywhere!!?”, a Fuse 1+ 30W owner posted photos of powder spread around their setup and asked how to keep things clean. Every shop running SLS or MJF deals with some version of this.

Is some dust normal?

Yes. Formlabs replied in the thread that it’s normal for powder to accumulate in the Fuse Sift workspace during depowdering and, with regular use, in other parts of the machine. The key, it said, is cleaning the workspace after each part extraction and doing regular maintenance elsewhere.

How often should SLS powder cleanup happen?

Another user said you should vacuum after every build, especially the filters. Formlabs points users to its guides for basic powder cleanup after extraction and for vent maintenance. Follow the manufacturer’s schedule for your machine.

What equipment helps?

  • A glovebox panel: Formlabs sells one as an accessory for the Sift to cut down on powder dispersion. The other user said they don’t love working with it but it does contain dust.
  • The right vacuum: use only the vacuum type your printer and powder vendor specify for powder cleanup, including any explosion-proof or ATEX requirement in their documentation.
  • Dedicated stations per material: Formlabs recommends separate depowdering and blasting equipment for white nylon to avoid cross-contamination.

Why does it matter beyond looks?

Powder on the floor and in filters is lost material, a contamination risk for other powders and a housekeeping issue for the people working there. Check the safety data sheet for each powder for handling and PPE guidance.

How do you make cleanup stick?

  • Make cleanup a checklist step at the end of every unpack, not something done “when it gets bad.”
  • Assign it to the person who unpacks the build.
  • Track it as a step in your production workflow so the time is visible and can be priced into labor.

A tidy depowdering area is also easier to show customers who tour the shop.
